Downslope becomes more and more weedy with areas of grape and rose openings; also areas of successional white pine and tulip poplar in various mixtures . Upslope;see plot BLUE.76;Plot is located on a lower slope above a gentle toe slope and the floodplain and below is a steeper midslope. This is a forest of mesophytic species including sugar maple, buckeye, and black walnut over a shrub layer of spicebush. Mostly pole to medium trees with a few scattered large tulip poplars. Piles of rocks suggest that land was cleared, probably for grazing. There is a sparse herb layer probably due to heavy shade.
Representativeness
Young forest on a cool slope but may represent climax species. Possible direct succession to climax forest species due to high soil fertility.
