Just across a small draw to the south is Tsuga canadensis - Tilia americana with no Rhododendron maximum. The plot is close to the NPS park boundary.;The plot is in the bottom of a hollow on a small ridge/knob between a creek and a side drainage. The substrate of sandstone boulders may have been placed here by ancient (or ongoing?) colluvial/alluvial processes. This community is a forest of Tsuga canadensis with an understory of Rhododendron maximum. This plot contrasts sharply with the adjacent obs point which supports hemlock with basswood. The difference is thought to be sandstone vs. shale. Maturing second growth.
Representativeness
The plot was placed on a knob between two drainages. The community extends into a draw along the main channel of Tony Hollow. This is a fairly typical Tsuga canadensis - Betula lenta / Rhododendron maximum community type.
