North towards the river Platanus occidentalis becomes more dominant but the dense understory of Asimina triloba remains. To the south, away from the river, there is tulip poplar / spicebush. Behind this is a Juglans nigra / Verbesina alternifolia forest. The entire floodplain is a mixture of successional forest species.;Floodplain forest located behind a river levee. A dense understory of Pawpaw impedes the growth of tall herbs such as Verbesina alternifolia. The forest is flooded semi-regularly. There is deep alluvium indicating that the river dumps lots of sediment during high water events. Successional forest type being dominated by Acer nigrum / Asimina triloba. The floodplain was most likely farmed at one time before the property became a park. The plot center is in a hollow probably carved out by an eddie when the river over-tops the levee.
Representativeness
This is a small patch of deciduous floodplain forest. This differs from other plots sampled at Bluestone River by having Acer nigrum as a major component instead of the successional Liriodendron tulipifera - Pinus strobus or the Liriodendron tulipifera /
