A small intermittent drainage is located ~90 downslope to the south. The New River is located ~400m west of the plot. There is an unpaved gated road ~300m west of the plot. The area is mostly forested and managed by the wVDNR but owned by the Army Corps. Of Engineers. There are large mown fields along the river maintained for camping.;Stunted woodland of Virginia pine-Red oak/Post oak/Carex pensylvanica growing on a hot dry SSW facing slope. The forest floor has lots of exposed shale fragments .5 inches in size. The slope is very steep. The trees are short in stature - this could be a result of edaphic conditions. There are several deer trails which cut across the plot. The forbs in the plot are looking very dessicated and the trees are losing there leaves, therefore the plot is more diverse than it appears.
Representativeness
Small patch of xeric oak-pine woodland. Similar to the almost shale barren plots sampled at the Bluestone National Scenic River.
