Crumps Bottom area has mostly successional forests (tuliptree, box elder) and maintained wildlife openings.;Ridge shoulder above bluffs above an outside bend of the New River. Shale parent material. Community is an open canopy forest or woodland dominated by unusual mixture of oaks (red, post, chinquapin, chestnut) with juniper and ash. Canopy is short and larger trees are busted up, probably due to drought stress. Shrubs are nearly absent. Understory is dominated by sedges and late season composites.
Representativeness
Large patch with unusual mix of trees, many indicating calcareous soil. Includes population of Berberis canadensis. Similar forest extends downslope to just above river.
