The plot is on the southern edge of the peninsula across the water, almost directly opposite the boat ramp next to Tom's Run. The plot is on a south facing slope approximately 250m from the river. The river seems to back up to a good height, as flotsam was observed littering the trail that extends from the road going through Indian Creek Campground, paralleling the New River on its eastern side.;The stand of T2 trees is rather sparsely distributed while the T3 and S1 layers are almost entirely missing. Besides the oak-sugar maple there are some ash, hickory and buckeye. The herb layer seems to be missing earlier season flora and there is already a thick cover of leaves on the floor, probably hiding some plants. A skid road runs along the downhill edge of the plot. There are some downed trees scattered throughout the plot.
Representativeness
Plot was placed to capture oak-hickory-sugar maple community type on south facing slope. Similar to plots sampled within the Bluestone National Scenic River.
