Large tract of land managed by the state for recreation and timber. At bottom of slope runs Wiley Branch, a tribuatry of Twelvepole Creek and on the other side of the river is Tick Ridge rd. Between this plot and the river is a hemlock-cucumber magnolia-beech community sampled in CABW.3.;Plot is on upper slope of xeric west-southwest facing shoulder slope with a canopy dominated by scarlet oak, chestnut oak and pitch pine. The understory is comprised of thicket of mountain laurel with blueberry interspersed. Greenbrier present shows signs of herbivory and the canopy in plot is somewhat open due to several large downed trunks and large limbs.
Representativeness
Plot was placed to capture dry upper slope dominated by Quercus prinus, Quercus coccinea and Pinus rigida. This is similar to plot CABW.2 only here there is Pinus rigida. Similar to other oak/heath plots sampled in West Virginia.
