Warmer aspects have dominance by white oak, also with low herb diversity. Area may be slated for road development and logging - currently this is on the edge of an extensive roadless area.;Convoluted dissected plateau on shale/sandstone lithology. Community is a mixed evergreen-deciduous forest which occurs on cooler aspects and around drains. Forest is dominated by medium sized hemlock and white oak with larger white pine scattered in stand. Hemlock and white pine regeneration dominate the understory. Old rotted sawn stump in plot. Conifers tend to be clustered in groves.
Representativeness
Conifer signature on north aspect of drain. Similar to plateau hemlock at Gauley, but here with white pine (as specified in USNUC association). There is a patch of giant laurel outside the plot, but it is sparse or absent in this type.
