Roadless area of state forest with extensive hemlock, wite pine and oak forests on acidic substrate.;Convoluted topography of a dissected plateau on shale/sandstone lithology. Site is at the bottom of a side ridge slightly elevated above a drainage bottom, but similar vegetation occurs in dry bottoms as well. Community is an evergreen forest dominated by hemlock and white pine with very little understory growth, possibly due to heavy shade and/or heavy deer herbivory. There are old rotted stumps and abundant pole-sized woody debris.

Large patch of heavy conifer dominance. Simple, low diversity white pine-hemlock of lower slopes.
