To the east and north of the opening is a Abies / Alnus woodland. To the west and south a Picea rubens - Tsuga canadensis - Betula alleghaniensis forest.;Early successional grassland. Probably historically logged and cleared for agriculture. Opening maintained by beaver and flooding. The area is within the state park so the main disturbances are from deer browse and possibly park visitors. There is an old fence line running along the north edge of the plot. At the time of the survey all of the Calamagrostis was bent over, most likely by recent strong wind gusts. Several fire scarred stumps were located on the western edge of the plot.
Representativeness
Small patch grassland community. Grades in and out of Carex stricta - Carex utriculata into almost pure Calamagrostis canadensis.
