The island is on the Potomac River and is on a small tract of the Chesepeake and Ohio Canal National Historic Park. A railroad trussel crosses the island ca. 70 m ESE of the plot. The community there appears to be a rich floodplain forest (CEGL4073). Across the back channel to the S there is a steep bank and then a flood terrace with more CEGL4073, to the SW ca. 60 m is a small patch of floodplain forest w Quercus palustris (see plot CHOH.4). At the upper end of the island is a thin Justicia depositional bar, then a small patch of Panicum virgatum prairie then our Sycamore plot. The back channel contains a rooted aquatic community Valesnaria - Zostera (see plot CHOH.2);Open sunny woodland on the upstream end of a river island. The plot consists of a small stand of Platanus occidentalis with flotsom and more open sunny herbaceous areas. The sycamore are surrounded by dense rack of flood piled woody debris. Most of the sycamore are bent over and broken off (flood copiced). The riverside of the plot has many low inclusions of mud flats and standing water w/ Zostera? And Justicia americana.
Representativeness
Small patch of sycamore riverscour woodland. Plot was placed in polygon mapped on CHOH land as an herbaceous depositional bar (HDEP). There is a very small patch of HDEP roughly 10 x 10 m at the upstream edge of the cobble bar.
