Large wetland complex surrounded by roads, residence, and agriculture. Towards the creek grades to an alder thicket. There are also Carex stricta - Calamagrostis meadows and hemlock swamps at this end of Cranesville Swamp.;Shrub/herb community dominated by Salix sericea with tall herbs including Typha dominating in open areas between the tall shrubs. There is an extremely lush cover in the open areas. Polemonium vanbruntiae scattered in shade and open. Putative successional pathway: Typha to Salix to Acer rubrum to Tsuga canadensis.
Representativeness
Small patch of a successional community which repeats at Canaan Valley and possibly elsewhere (Dobbins Slashing). This occurrence seems at later stage than some with Salix overtopping and shading out Typha in patches.
