This community type lies between Alder near the creek and Spruce woodland/forest to the south. The area is TNC property and therefore protected. Cranesville swamp is bordered by farmland.;Probably early to mid-successional with well developed Sphagnum hummocks. Some scattered spruce are doing fairly well, but dead snags indicate probable beaver burns in the past. Dense mat of cranberry and Sphagnum with Gaylussacia, and Photinia on hummocks, Rhyncospora in the hollows. No trails appear to disturb this area but it is close to the Powerline. Organic peat appears to overlay residual Greenbrier derived soils. 2 soil samples collected.
Representativeness
This community occupies a good portion of the area between the stream (Alder) and a spruce woodland. The plot was placed to avoid a small Typha invasion and potential soil compaction under the Powerline.
