Upland forest/shrubland to north and south. Herbaceous wetland upstream dominated by Glyceria canadensis. Downstream is beaver dam and Typha / Spiraea.;Emergent grasses in impounded beaver pond. Old decayed stumps indicate this was probably forested swamp prior to logging. The pond dries periodically as indicated by underwater mud cracks and soil mottling. Water covers the entire community at a depth of 10-50cm.
Representativeness
First pond we've surveyed. The setting (beaver pond) is typical for Canaan Valley, but this is one of few ponds that have emergent vegetation. (see polygon on hard copy imagery)
