Open valley bottom with extensive wetlands grading to hawthorn savannas on lower slopes then northern hardwood forest on the mountain slopes. One of the largest near roadless tracts in the east.;Alluvial terrace with large stand of tall Alnus incana ssp. rugosa with diverse herbaceous understory of sedges, grasses and forbs. Presence of Polemonium van-bruntiae and a scarcity of Sphagnum indicates a high soil pH. Alders from hummocks at their bases but otherwise the surface is quite flat. Alders averaging about 5-6 cm dbh (Just under the measurement cut off.)

Large patch of Alder (circumneutral type) with very even distribution of species in all strata.
