Highway 72 cuts along the gorge near the river, below the plot. Historic strip mine revegetated with cultivated species is above the plot. The mid-slope section of the gorge appears fairly uniform with mixed mesophytic and northern hardwood species. The area is part of the Army National Guard training base. Old logging roads disect the slope.;Upper northeast facing canyon slope with mixed hardwoods dominated by Acer saccharum, Tilia americana, and Quercus rubra, with very sparse shrub layer and moderate herb layer dominated by Caulophyllum thalictroides. Rocky soil and scattered rocks with mosses. Compare to plot #1 with southern aspect.
