WMA owned by Army COE. Upslope grades to dryer oak forest types (see ELKR.3 and 4). Old growth patch is large with evidence of patch disturbances. Large areas nearby were recently timbered and seeded with non-native legumes to promote deer.;Lower middle hillslope on cool aspect. There is abundant rotted downfall, visble on air photo, which may predate stand establishment. More recent downfall is also present but less abundant. Mesophytic deciduous forest is dominated by large, tall beech, basswood, and hickory. Sugar maple and beech dominate the subcanopy. Herbs are rather sparse, possibly due to shading. Several moosewood are knocked over but still have leaves. There is evidence of multiple disturbance events in stand, but no cutting. The state rare sedge, Carex cumberlandensis grows in exposed soil on old tip mounds.
Representativeness
Large patch old growth mesophytic forest on lower slopes. Strong contrast in composition compared to ELKR. 3 and 4. Large trees are patchy, but scattered.
