About 250 m below us in the Gauley River, ~30m below us is an ATV trail that we hiked in on. There is an old trail about 30 m to the E. The road we drove in on from Marvel is about 100 m to the W.;Moist, rocky mixed mesophytic forest on gorge slope which contains Tilia americana, Aesculus flava , Liriodendron tulipifera, Acer rubrum and Magnolia acuminata. Moss and litter covered rocks averaging the size of basket balls are throughout the plot. The community seems to be fairly large and contains more diversity than mixed meso forests sample thus far. Loose colluvial gorge slope. Probably has a few spring ephemerals that we missed by sampling late in the summer.
Representativeness
Large patch. Mid gorge slope in mixed mesophytic forest, a diverse amount of trees and contains Buckeye. This represents the largest stand of this community that has been sampled thus far in the study area. This is more typical at NERI.
