The Gauley River is located roughly 50 m E of the plot. Here there is a thin band of a shrubland/herb community sampled by Greg Short and B. Streets last season. The back channel is located ca. 70 m to the W of the plot. Here there is a higher levee but the community is very similar to the plot. Across the back channel is a succ. Floodplain forest, also sampled in 2006 by GS and BS.;Mixed evergreen deciduous/Rhododendron maximum forest growing on a small levee just wide enough for a plot. The community extends upriver and down river along the island for roughly 100 m. There are a few piles of old flotsam but it looks a couple of years old. The trees here are somewhat small in stature and look somewhat young +/- 30 yrs. Several deer trails and a browseline observed in plot.
Representativeness
Small patch of a hemlock-mixed deciduous/RhMe forest on the upstream edge of a large river island. Plot was placed to sample evergreen signature on the aerial photo and ELU 1130-2130.
