Nice big hemlocks adjacent to plot on one side, on the other is successional tuliptree - there is also successional pitch pine nearby. Additional sycamore just downstream - might approach hemlock floodplain forest.;Small seepy flat bottom on a rolling plateau of sandstone lithology. Landform 31 (wet flat) from ELU model seems to accurately predict these incipient seeps although they are poorly developed here at Gauley NRA compared to New River plateaus. Community here is a forest of hemlock and tuliptree growing on hummocks with bare mud in a low gradient channel through vegetated flats with wetland indicator herbs.
Representativeness
Plot placed to sample ELU 1131 (wet flat) and further constrained to wetland. GPS/GIS precision limits perfect placement within GIS polygon. Plot is smaller than standard to exclude upland.
