The forest adjacent to this riverside community is a successional Liriodendron tulipifera-Liquidambar/BeNi. Upstream from our plot is a low river scoured herb community. Across the river is an active railroad grade.;Frequently flooded woodland below a rapid section of the Gauley River. Plot is located on the river's edge on a large highwater "island". The woodland floor is mostly devoid of vegetation except for a high cover of Osmunda regalis. The sand is likely deposited during highwater events by the rapids upstream. This community may look totally different later in the season. Will likely be dominated by weedy annuals.
Representativeness
Linear patch of open woodland dominated by Betula nigra. Similar to PLOC-BENI communities found along both the Bluestone and New Rivers. This stand has a higher cover of Osmunda regalis than I have observed in this c. t.
