Up slope from the plot ca. 100 m to the E is a road. To the N of our plot ca. 200 m is plot GARI.37. Below the plot ca. 350 m is the Gauley River at a rapid section with very nice flat rock communities. See plot GARI.37.;Mid-successional forest growing on a steep gorge. The forest is predominently beech with a dense understory of hemlock. The slope here is dissected by several shallow parallel running drainages and nose spurs with a W aspect. Our plot is focused on a nose, but the community is in both. Although the "draws" are a little more hemlocky and the nose is a little more beechy. Where's the Rhododendron?
