Extensive forest criss-crossed by old roads and trails, now apparently only accessible on foot. There are few weeds in area even along trails, probably due to acidic soils. Limestone bedrock eveidenced by many sinkholes in area but little soil enrichment. The few enriched sites are heavilty infested with Microstegium vimineum.;Trough between Long Mountain and Ben's Ridge mapped as Tonoloway limestone. Gentle rolling topography with an extensive young to middle aged matrix forest dominated by oaks and ericad shrubs. Vegetation and soil pH do not reflect any enrichment by limestone, possibly due to residual soil on erosional landform having Ca leached out. Quercus prinus is the dominant oak throughout much of stand. There is good oak regeneration in the short shrub layer but not much in the tall shrub layer. Open canopy in plot is due to a canopy gap caused by windfall.
Representativeness
Extensive matrix forest. Plot placed to include a mix of oaks which may occur in more pure patches elsewhere in stand.
