Towards the river is veg plot GARI.47. Above our community ca. 100 m is an old RR grade, now a driveable trail/road. There is also rafting company camp just out of our plot to the SW. There is a small "back channel" puddle between our plot and the R R grade.;Cold dense, low growing forest. Large litter/moss covered boulders dominate the forest floor. The boulders are likely colluvium from upslope. (Pre-railroad). The community may flood during catastrophic rain events (100yrs). Probably flooded more frequently prior to the Summersville Dam. The forest here is early to mid successional with a depauperate herb layer. The shadiness of the community makes it ideal for mosses and ferns. The area probably doesn't get a lot of surface flow, but the lows probably fill up w/ water during periods of flooding in the channel.
Representativeness
Medium sized band of boulder field terrace forest. Very similar to plot sampled this season downstream river right from "Pillow Rock" rapid. We placed the plot here to sample ELU type 1,133.
