About 200 m below us (E) is the Gauley R. About halfway between the plot and river is a RR grade. While there is no Laportea in this plot, there are some above us to the W. Upslope ca. 50 m the forest transitions into a more mesic forest RhMa drops out and LaCA comes in.;Plot sits on a sideslope with many large rocks, most buried in litter, but a few bare rocks just out ~1.5m. There are tulip poplar, red oaks, Frasier magniola, basswood and sugar maple. Moss covers most of the rocks. The understory contains mostly Dryopteris intermedia. The plot has probably been logged before and is successional, but at present there is not much disturbance from human use. The landscape undulates, some from old tip mounds.
