Isolated water gap on area known as the Smokehole. Which is home to many unique limestone communities. Redman Run is located ca. 20 m below the base of the plot. The S Br Potomac River is located ca. 100m E of the plot. Across the run is a moss covered cliff which appears to be sandstone. Several geology types are layered within this water gap. There is an old jeep trail along the run, which runs from Smokehole Road to the mouth of Redman Run. It is very delapidated and undriveable. The forest across the drain is a varient of the rich hemlock with the hemlocks breaking up and the Tilia becoming dominant. The forest floor is mossy bedrock or mossy colluvium. At the bottom of the cliff is a deep pile of undecomposed leaves (>3 ft). The rock is somewhat amphitheatre shaped and perhaps the wind blows the leaves there. The community appears to be somewhat low in diversity. Much of the rock wall is covered with a green dust lichen. The cliff is roughly 30 m tall with no ledges and 40% overhang.
Representativeness
Small patch of dust covered limestone cliff. Similar dust collected on other seepy sandstone cliffs. Here the rock type is somewhat different looking and is mapped as limestone. Plot revisited 8-9-2013 for Trimble points and photos.
