Private in holding of isolated "roadless" tract of river gorge known as the Smokehole. Area is home to many unique limestone plants and habitats. See plots GRAN.45,46,47,48 for more context. To the SW ca. 20 m above the water gap is a thin band of cliff top pine woodland below the plot the community is a glade with Juniper and pine, upslope on knob is a chestnut oak - scarlet oak - white oak forest with a few S2 pines coming up.;Open sunny woodland of Juniperus virginiana - Quercus stellata / Carex pensylvanica - Danthonia spicata. Community is on a steep SE slope above an even steeper cliffy gorge slope. The woodland is very open with high cover by graminoids. Several old 10 in. diameter stumps in plot. Some fire scarred woody debris found along the edge of the plot. Relatively low diversity but high herb cover.
Representativeness
Small patch open woodland represented by eastern red cedar - post oak / poverty oat grass - Pennsylvania sedge. Similar to plots sampled at the Bluestone NSR and several SHALE plots completed in Hardy and Mineral Counties.
