Upslope above rock break is a more sterile residual soil which supports white oak - hickory forest with a dense lawn of Carex woodii. Nice intact forests on limestone - needs conservation before it is logged or subdivided.;Bluff overlooking the Greenbrier River, with limestone outcrops exposed on upper shoulder. Where limestone is exposed in erodable positions, soil is enriched and supports a calciphilic forest dominated by large Eastern Red Cedar, white ash, shagbark hickory and oaks. The canopy is open and there is shrubby undergrowth and tree saplings. There is a patch of the globally rare American barberry in the plot. Herb layer includes twinleaf and tall larkspur.
Representativeness
Small patch - linear community, repeated below limestone outcrops. This patch is on warm aspect with abundant juniper. Plot placed between 2 limestone bands to insure homogeneity.
