Other Red Oak varients include understories with hay scented fern or pensylvania sedge. On Virginia side is a Pitch Pine forest over Mt. Laurel.;High elevation ridgetop with short canopied Red Oaks over an ericad shrub layer dominated by Fetterbush and Mt. Laurel. Mixed size classes of Red Oak. Larger trees have scars (no charcoal) on downhill side. Oaks have been chewed by insects (probably gypsy moth) this year.

Appears to be one of 2 - 3 varients of high elevation Red Oak on this ridgetop which interfinger and repeat in patches.
