Matrix forests are mixed Oak / Sedge (see GWNF.25) and White Pine - Oak / Mountain Laurel (GWNF.26).;Steep boulderfield slope near the top of a cove near the ridgetop of Shenandoah Mt. Trees rooted in boulders are almost exclusively Sweet Birch. Boulders average 1m across and are mostly flattened, with heavy cover by lichens. Trees have wide, spreading branches which hug the ground above and below the main trunk. Fire scars on dead snag below plot, but fire likely was stopped by boulders - large Birch clumps may be very old.
