Large N - S running ridgetop within the George Washington Nat'l Forest. The WV - VA state line follows the ridge line. The state line is located ca. 50m from the plot . The ridgetop communities consist of Oak / Heath forest, Oak / Heath shrubland / woodland (created by gypsy moth dieback of Oaks), Oak - Hickory forest, and Oak - Pine / Heath forest.;Mature forest community growing on the NW facing shoulderslope of a N - S running ridgeline. The forest floor is covered with large (0.5m 2) sandstone plates. Growing on the soil between the stones are small dense patches of Deschampsia flexuose. The overstory is dominated by Quercus prinus and Q. rubra. The understory is mostly Acer saccharum. A few large standing dead oaks within the plot have Armillaria bootstraps under their bark.

Large patch of a Chestnut Oak - Red Oak / Sugar Maple / Hairgrass forest. Plot was placed to sample high wind resource polygon located on the southern end of Great North Mtn.
