USFS land extends up mountain to Virginia line. There are also shale barren - like woodland on hottest aspects (GWNF.44), oak - hickory - sugar maple forest (GWNF.45) on cool aspect, and drier oak - hickory in small patches on S aspects (not sampled);Shale foothills above a small, settled valley. Large areas on south slopes have forests of Virginia pine, which is even-aged and probably succesional to oak-hickory forest. There are few, if any stumps, little or no sign of fire - site may have been cleared for agriculture or timber long ago.
