Upstream are open woodland and wooded herbaceous communities (see HAFE.33, 34).;Annual zone on small sandy beach. Plot includes the densest patch of vegetation and some area with bare sand and a slightly lower swale with only scattered Cyperus and Populus deltiodes seedlings. Low ledges of bedrock emerge from the sand and probably help stabalize beach. Community of annuals extends downstream under bridge on more gravelly substrate. There are a few stems of Salix and Populus in the short shrub strata and a few species of perenials but community is mostly annuals including; Ambrosia artemisiifolia, Artemesia annua, Cyperus spp., Eragrostis spp., and many others. This is probably the largest patch of annual dominance we have seen along the Shenandoah.
Representativeness
Annual zone on small sandy beach underneath high bridge along the Shenandoah River. Plot represents about 1/3 of entire stand.
Plantings above stabalize bank. Plot is just upstream from bridge which probably effects microclimate slightly. Constant noise pollution due to road. Beach is impacted by pedestrian traffic (heavy to moderate use). Swimmers (kids) arrived during sampling. Bridge probably does not effect hydrology much.
