Directly across river is a tall cliff which may effect floodplain depostion landforms on this side of river. In the river out from plots is near the downstream extent of scattered Justicia americana patches (see plot HAFE45). Behind the tall herb riverbank there is a narrow band of Platanus / Acer negundo forest, followed by train tracks, ditches, and a road.;Sloping (towards south away from canopy, towards river) riverbank of sand, gravel, and cobble alluvium on top of bedrock channel shelf. Plot is towards the lower end of a series of bedrock ledges and falls. Plot has a sunny exposure due to south aspect towards river, but is partly shaded by overhanging trees. Riverbank supports a community of tall herbs, mostly perennials, which resembles an old field community, but here it occurs in its natural disturbance regime of flooding and burial by sediments.
Representativeness
Plot is long and narrow and of variable width (average 2.5 m) to maintain homogeneity. Community of annual herbs which occurs in a narrow zone just below the tall herbs is excluded unless the species occur within the tall herb community, likewise wetland
