Downslope just above agricultural fields is an oak zone with much less Lindera and Asimina. To the south is a younger forest. Some areas of this west flank have dominance by Liriodendron tulipifera over Asimina and Lindera. Canopy trees outside plot include Quercus velutina, Quercus rubra, Liriodendron, and Quercus coccinea.;Gentle west slope on Tomstown dolomite. Soils are mapped as Dekalb series, derived from sandstone USDA SCS 1973), but geology map unit is Tomstone dolomite, and soil pH measured in field was 7.0. Slope was cleared for agriculture in past, evidenced by rock piles around some of largest trees. There is a line of huge Quercus alba to the south of plot which may represent an old fence line. Forest canopy at present is dominated by Quercus alba with a mixture of other species. The subcanopy is dominated by Nyssa sylvatica. There is a dense tall shrub layer comprised of Lindera benzoin and Asimina triloba. The herb layer is very sparse due to heavy shade and possibly late season visitation. Lots of down wood and absence of sawn stumps suggest this stand has not been logged since it was abandoned from agriculture,
Representativeness
Plot is fairly representative of the midslope of this west flank on Tomstown dolomite, but there is quite a bit of canopy variation. This plot has above average cover by Nyssa sylvatica in the canopy but the jungle of Lindera and Asimina is typical.
