Surrounding forest is high elevation red oak with stunted canopy.;Summit of ridgeline with an open community centered on exfoliating eroded boulders with crevices. Lack of soil limits tree growth to a few coppiced birch trees and smaller saplings. Boulder tops are covered with lichens and mosses. Herb component includes high elevation indicators (Dryopteris campyloptera).
Representativeness
Small patch of bouldery woodland - shrubland on summit of ridge. Plot samples upper part of patch, which extends north downslope a bit, where it includes larger trees, including Betula allegheniensis.
