Landscape Narrative ? Remote high-elevation ridge system w/ stunted red oak. Small patch types include birch boulderfield and montane red oak / heath. Typical oak / heath is abundant at slightly lower elevations.;Nearly level saddle on high elevation ridge - saddle may be related to geology break to conglomerate sandstone. Soils are better developed than other communities along ridge line. Forest canopy is also taller than the extensive montane red oak. Canopy here includes white oak and hickory. Understory is dominated by moosewood, dense in patches. Herbs are sparse. Large fallen red oak is just outside plot.
Representativeness ? Large patch of oak-hickory in saddle - distinguished from matrix red oak by taller canopy w/ white oak and hickory.
