Large tract of forested land managed as a WMA by the WVDNR. Unsure of the ownership. The forest from here to the HQ following the flying squirrel trail range goes from mixed mesophytic forest tulip poplar-basswood-sugar maple/stinging wood nettle, successional eastern hemlock ti a thin patch of deciduous/Rhododendron. This community of Beech/Hemlock is dominant. The plot overlooks Laurel Lake.;Steep NW facing forested slope of Fagus grandifolia/Tsuga canadensis/Polystichum acrostichoides forest. Many of the larger T2 trees have large triangular fire scars on the uphill side. There is little cover but high diversity S2 and H layers. The low cover is likely due to deer browse. Many of the S1 and T3 hemlocks appear to be weakened by the woody adelgid.
Representativeness
Mixed deciduous/conifer forest growing on a steep NW facing midslope. Overstory represented by American beech with an understory of Eastern hemlock. Similar to plots sampled at MONF and GARI.
