Above and below the remnant of giant cane, Japanese knotweed and other invasives are predominant in understory. Linear floodplain is bordered by the Guyandotte River on one side and herbicided steep bank leading up to railroad grade on the other side. Area is successional forest broken by railroad and rural residences.;Linear patch of giant cane woodland with floodplain tree canopy between railroad and river. Heavily impacted by invasives. Cane is 8 ft tall. A few taller silver maple are scattered above the box elder canopy. Infrequently flooded terrace with wetland soil about 8 m above current water level, separated from river by steep riser, low active floodplain, and steep bank.
Representativeness
Plot was placed to sample taller, denser section of giant cane, although this meant a compromise in terms of canopy integrity (mostly box elder at this spot, with less silver maple).
