The swamp is located in ana area largely used for agriculture in a remnant of the Kanawha River floodplain. There are several old roads and trails that cut in at various points, though much is unbroken. Railroad tracks are ca 200m NE of the plot and make up the boundary along that side. The swamp edge and a hay field is ca 50m west.;Large patch of Quercus palustris - Quercus bicolor swamp located on private land. The overstory is dominated by Q. palustris, Q. bicolor, Fraxinus americana, Acer rubrum, and Liquidambar styraciflua. The shrub layers are sparse, mostly made up of Fraxinus americana and Acer with occasionally dense Toxicodendron radicans. The plot is placed in an area with more diverse herb cover. Outside the plot in some places there is heavy lizardtail cover, to the exclusion of most other species.
Representativeness
Plot was chosen to sample large patch of Quercus palustris - Quercus bicolor swamp, and placed in this location to capture Q. bicolor dominance.
