Steep forested gorge owned in part by the state park and the TNC. Downslope ~35m northwest is the Brush Creek trail. 30m below that is Brush Creek Falls. North of the plot ~50m just above the trail is a dense stand of yew growing under hemlock and rock oak.;Mixed evergreen-deciduous forest growing on a steep northwest facing gorge slope. The overstory is dominated by Quercus prinus and Pinus strobus. There is a dense S1 and S2 layer. Most of the trees have an outward bend. There are several deer trails crossing the plot but the area doesn’t seem overly browsed. As proof, this plot contains the nicest patch of Paxistima canbyi Brian has ever observed. Some of the shrubs are over 2dm in length. Small white scales were observed on 1/3 of the estimated 300 stems which are sick or dying as a result.
Representativeness
Small patch of white pine-chestnut oak forest with Canby's mountain lover. Plot was placed to maximize cover of Paxistima. This is only one of three plots containing this shrub. The other four sites that we observed last year are growing under hemlock-
