Toward the pond, remnant hemlock trees rise above a Scirpus cyperinus / Sphagnum community. Toward the upland, swamp grades to hemlock - birch - red maple - magnolia forest with dense Rhododendron understory. This forest (including what is now pond) was logged about 40 years ago.;Most trees are stressed with dead sections. Remnant of once larger hemlock swamp at piney swamp. Hemlock (living and snags) extend out into "beaver burn". This plot does not include the " beaver burn" area, but rather the more intact margin. Open woodland with many tip mounds, down wood, and moderately, dense shrub layer. Light reaches the ground and sphagnum cover is nearly continuous. A few large old logged stumps and smaller beaver-chewed stumps in plot.
