Grades into woodland swamp (MINE.2) toward the pond. Grades into upland hemlock - birch - red maple away from pond. Property belongs to private landowner who could choose to log at any time.;Hemlock swamp with tall, old trees and dense Rhododendron understory. Sphagnum grows where light penetrates the canopy. Why was this not logged with the rest of the swamp? Perhaps trees were stunted at the time of logging? Hollows contain some standing water. Hummocks are relatively dry.
Representativeness
Probably the oldest bit of forested swamp left at Piney Swamp. This may be old-growth G2 community and worth conservation attention!
