Wilderness area near trails. Upland slopes are mixed hardwood - hemlock / Rhododendron hell. Low diversity acidic drainage. Possibly a former levee or dam downstream outside plot.;Small creek alluvial terrace in valley bottom with swamp forest dominated by red spruce, hemlock, and yellow birch. Trees on hummocks, Sphagnum in hollows. Trees in lines from regeneration on old nurse logs. Site mostly flooded by ground water seepage rather than overbank flow. Railroad bed truncates drainage. The plot lies between the stream and the old railroad bed (yellow creek trail).
Representativeness
Typical large patch conifer swamp forest. Plot was placed to avoid large hummocks and campers trample. This is somewhat wetter than much of the surrounding forest, which grades into upland forest.
