The wetland lies adjacent to the Dolly Sods Wilderness Area. It is surrounded by a dense spruce forest. The plot is surrounded by an open "bog" community (MONF.128) to the west, a Carex folliculata community (MONF.127) to the North and a spruce shrubland to the south.;This area is very similar to plot MONF.128. Open "bog" with Eriophorum - Rhyncospora. This plot is different because of the occurrence of Oceanorus, a lower water table, and more diversity. The area was historically logged and at one time (post WWII) used as a bombing range. The boardwalk and the Northland Loop trail are approx. 100 m south of the plot center. There are several spur trails leading into the bog from both the loop trail and the boardwalk.
Representativeness
Small patch community. Alder Run is the only place we have seen Oceanorus thus far in the season. It is found throughout this wetland. It is not a common type in West Virginia but it occurs with some abundance here at Dolly Sods.
