The stand is surrounded by and interfingers into Leersia oryzoides (see MONF.152), with Leersia on the higher , dryer ground. Tall spruce forest with almost no woodland/shrub transition borders the open Leersia/Sparganium wetland.;This Sparganium stand occupies the wettest part of a drying, older beaver burn, with abundant dead standing and down trees (silvery weathered). It interfingers with and is surrounded by Leersia oryzoides. Early successional type that could eventually revert to spruce swamp, or be flooded by a renewal of beaver activity. No other disturbance (besides beaver some years ago) is apparent.
Representativeness
This small patch community of Sparganium is one of the larger stands we have seen that is not bordered by open water. It is a good example of Sparganium in a beaver burn wetland.
