This high level area is very close to the divide between Red Run and Engine Run. An old railroad runs across the upslope edge (probably little impact on drainage). Some Norway spuce plantations in the surrounding red-spruce - hemlock - red maple upland forest.;Early-mid successional open fen on Pottsville bedrock. This area was logged and apparently burned down to bedrock in the early 1900's. No trails or roads lead to this wetland. Disturbance is minimal aside from deer browsing. The hemlocks here are very sickly, probably due to inundation. No sign of the adelgid.
Representativeness
Plot placed in typical part of stand, including clumps of hemlock trees and shrubs in a largely open cottongrass / Sphagnum fen. Seems typical of acidic, shallow soiled fen on Pottsville.
