Large open peatland in wilderness area, surrounded by spruce and northern hardwoods.;A few old silvery stumps protrude from the peat in this Carex canescens - cottongrass peatland. A small, nearly stagnant stream of water crosses the plot. Small saturated hummocks of sphagnum cover the peat. The presence of very old stumps indicates this was once a woodland. Possibly beaver activity may have raised the water level, or an older (logging era) process such as seepage changes.
