High on the Allegheny Front adjacent to the Dolly Sods Wilderness. Surrounded by dense expanses of stunted and flagged red spruce / great laurel - mt. laurel intermixed with rocky blueberry - huckleberry plains.;Open shrubland dominated by Pinus rigida / Kalmia latifolia - Gaylussacia baccata / Sphagnum papillosum hummock and wet Rhynchospora alba - Eriophorum virginicum / Sphagnum rubellum lows. There is a trail ca. 50m southwest. The soils here are thin over acidic Pottsville sandstone. The water input mostly comes from rain. The wetland is located on a large flat within a saddle on the west face of the Allegheny Front. The sphagnum is creating the wetland by taking advantage of the water ponding on the sandstone bedrock and the slow runoff and the pine likes the acid and dryness of the Pottsville.
Representativeness
Small patch of shrub swamp. It differs from other plots I have sampled by being dominated by Pinus rigida not spruce or hemlock.
