Across backchannel is a linear patch of tulip poplar with Rhododendron and hemlock in the understory. Much of the upper floodplain has younger forest dominated by tulip polar.;Upper floodplain terrace along bouldery reach of river, on levee behind a back-channel of the main river. This position is probably only occasionally flooded as evidence by lack of flotsam, down wood, and litter accumulation. The forest on the levee is dominated by large red oak over an understory of pole sized sugar maple. There is a dense herb layer strongly dominated by New York Fern.
